Mike McCarthy talks about his time on the Pennsylvania Turnpike

Most coaches come from humble beginnings - they're usually players who couldn't scale the ladder at some point, and they generally find their places in the sports they love through different avenues and the opportunities to teach others. Coaching is generally a hard climb as well; most coaches take years and go from high school on up as far as they can. Along the way, there are the inevitable jobs that must be taken to support families between coaching tenures and out of season. Nearly every successful coach can point to a time when he had to swallow his pride and take jobs that were far less than glamorous.

Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy told his story during the Packers' first press conferences after landing in Dallas for the media crunch that will accompany Super Bowl XLV. While working as a volunteer assistant at the University of Pittsburgh, McCarthy made money with a job collecting tolls at the Pennsylvania Turnpike -- spending as much time looking at playbooks as anything else.

"It was a summer job," McCarthy said. "It was something that I felt I needed to do between graduating from Fort Hays State University (in Kansas). You get your master's degree and you go and collect tolls. That doesn't quite add up, but that was my plan and path. Really it was a good experience. It was something really just to make some money before the season started at the University of Pittsburgh before we went to training camp.

"I know a lot has been made about it. I don't want to disrespect the Pennsylvania Turnpike. I did my job and I studied while I was there when there were no cars coming through the booth. It was a good experience. I always felt that was the normal way; you have summer jobs, you do those types of things, and I'm glad I took the path that I did as far as a young man back then being exposed to those types of things."

McCarthy's no-nonsense approach comes from his own experience - his dad was a Pennsylvania firefighter and policeman who also owned his own bar near the steel mills of Pittsburgh. He'll be facing the Steelers this Sunday, but McCarthy is as much a working-class Pittsburgher as anyone who pays for a seat at Heinz Field and waves a Terrible Towel.

CBS Subs 'Mike & Molly' for 'Two and a Half Men,' Will Ferrell is Not the New 'Office' Boss and More

Filed under:

Charlie SheenCBS is enacting its first Charlie Sheen contingency plan: The network ordered two more episodes each of 'Mike & Molly' and 'Rules of Engagement' to help deal with any issues arising from the 'Two and a Half Men' star's absence, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sheen began rehab this weekend after being hospitalized in the wake of a reportedly very wild party with some porn stars at his home. 'Two and a Half Men' went on immediate hiatus. THR reports that Sheen will be unable to work for three months while he undergoes treatment.

In other TV news ...

o. Richard Dreyfuss has signed on for a multi-episode arc on 'Parenthood.' The actor will appear in the final four episodes of the season as theater producer Gilliam T. Blount, an old friend of Zeke's who's looking for a comeback. [TV Line]

o. Will Ferrell's guest spot on 'The Office' will not turn into something bigger. Star Rainn Wilson confirmed that Ferrell's character will definitely not become the new Dunder Mifflin boss. [Entertainment Weekly]

o. 'The Daily Show' beat 'Conan' in the 18-34 demographic for the first time last last week. After a strong debut in November, 'Conan' has only managed to hold onto his lead in the 18-34 demo until this week, while 'The Daily Show' has beaten 'Conan' in the 18-49 demo since December. [Deadline]

The New Jersey Nets star on the NBA coming to London, reading Harry Potter and his favourite pasta shape

Welcome to London, Devin ... It's a pleasure to be here.

Yeah, maybe for you. Have you had a good look around? Not so much. I saw Big Ben, and I think we drove past Buckingham Palace yesterday, but that was as much as I've got to see. I've had a good look around my hotel.

But the good news is you'll be back in March, and actually playing some basketball ... Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it. The crowds here are great. We played here two years ago against Miami and the crowd was amazing then. I watch a little bit of football on TV so I know a little bit what to expect from you guys.

Do you think Britain is ready to become a nation of basketballaholics? I do think it could take off. People are curious enough, and I think it's popular enough already.

Are we more likely to fall for basketball than you are to take up football? I think it's even. America already loves soccer. A lot of my friends played it when they were kids.

So you'll be back here regularly from now on? I think that's the trend they're trying to start ? to follow in the NFL's footsteps, have two different teams play here every year, try to globalise the game. When you see it up close and personal as opposed to on TV, it's got more of an effect.

Will the rest of Europe/the world get a visit too, or is it a special treat just for us? I think the goal is for it to go to other European cities. It's sort of a test run here and then it can expand. I think pretty soon you'll see every NBA team play at least two games a season overseas.

Won't they miss you back in wherever-it-is-you-play? I don't think so. We're moving to a new building and a new city ? they haven't had us for that long so I don't think they'll miss us for a couple of days.

The last time you were here, some English bloke took the mickey out of you on a practise court and the video went viral. Some people thought it was all a set-up arranged by Adidas. What's the truth? I believe it was arranged. Still, I let him get past me too easily and the video was a bit embarrassing. I learned a valuable lesson. Actually I ran into his brother yesterday ? he did an interview with me. We're trying to set up a rematch right now ? I think I'll take that one a little bit more seriously.

And what ? other than revenge ? are your goals for the season? For the team, the target's always to get into the play-offs. Me, I'm trying to get into my all-star form that I had two years ago.

Your other famous moment was a 47-foot buzzer-beater last year that is now known as "the Harris Heave". Do you practise that kind of stuff? Not really, that's just down to instinct.

So if you tried that shot 10 times, how many would go in? I'd say out of 10 I'd hit at least three.

That's pretty good going. Who'd get more, though? Who's the best basketball player in the entire world? Got to be Kobe Bryant. He's been up there a while now.

Enough about basketball, what was the last concert you went to? I believe the last one I went to was Alicia Keys, but I go to a fair amount. I'm going to see Eminem and Jay-Z play together at Yankee Stadium next week.

And what was the last thing you saw at the cinema? I just went to see Inception the other day. It was pretty good, but I hear it's better the second time around so I might have to see it again.

Do you read much? Is there a book you could recommend to Small Talk's avid readership? The last book I read was the last Harry Potter. I think you guys have all read it already.

You've got a pretty intricate tattoo going on down your arm. What's that of exactly? That's kind of my conscience. It's just there with me, all the time. I wouldn't say I designed it but I had a hand in it, me and the tattoo artist himself.

Cheese or chocolate? Well, I'm from Wisconsin so I've got to say cheese.

Why's that? Because Wisconsin is pretty famous for its cheese.

No it isn't. Small Talk has never heard of cheese from Wisconsin? It's true. I think Wisconsin cheddar's the big one.

What's your favourite pasta shape? I like Fettucini Alfredo, so it's fettucini, right?

Fettucini, you say. An intriguing choice. And who would win a fight between a lion and a tiger? A lion ? he's the king of the jungle.

A popular yet considered answer. I'd better give you a little time for souvenir shopping before you head home. Thanks Small Talk. I'll get a souvenir if I can find one.

Good luck Devin, bye! Bye!

Pass or Fail: Inaugural NHL All-Star Game Fantasy Draft

RALEIGH, NC -- Now that we've all had some time to digest the first NHL All-Star Weekend Fantasy Draft, we figured it's time to formally find out your thoughts on the experiment.

The fans in the Convention Center dug it. This may be another case for the NHL in which the live experience trumped the televised one, as we heard more than a few of gripes about how it played on TV during last night's live blog.

TSN's coverage had some home runs: The mic'd up players gave us classic moments, like Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens thanking the hockey gods he wasn't decapitated by a Shea Weber slap shot. (Weber later told us he hadn't seen Price's comments, but that the Habs goalie came to him after that Nashville Predators game and said something similar.)

But that coverage also had its problems. Muting the mics at the podium would have left a layer of mystery for the selections, with the captains' debates left for "mic'd up" segments later on. Treating the event like an entry draft worked, but it could have gone farther: How about specifically breaking down what each player brings to the team from a skills competition perspective?

And while we felt he was a whimsical master of ceremonies, James Duthie can be an acquired taste, based on your feedback last night ...

Overall, the Fantasy Draft felt like an NHL Awards Show with the players slightly more engaged and the results slightly less predictable. Like last season's Awards in Las Vegas, a looser (re: inebriated) vibe may have helped the Draft a bit. There were definitely a few players who showed up in the, ahem, proper mindset, and that relaxed the atmosphere.

Was there enough drama for you? The family and Carolina Hurricanes teammate pressures on Eric Staal? The Sedin split? Jonathan Toews' plummet down the draft board? Phil Kessel as Mr. Irrelevant? (Oh, and predictably, Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke has protested that there was a last player picked. As we're sure he would have had it been Paul Stastny.)

Whether the Draft was an overall success or failure depends on how this thing comes together in the next two days; but for the Draft itself, we'd like to hear your thoughts:

Chicago man wears Packers tie to work, is promptly fired

Follow Yahoo! Sports on Facebook and be the first to know about the most interesting stories of the day.

From Chicago's WGNtv.com comes the unfortunately real story of a Chicago car salesman who was fired because he wore a Green Bay Packers tie to work. And making it even worse, the man wore it because his grandma was a Packers fan who had recently died and was buried two days before her beloved team's NFC Championship game matchup with the Chicago Bears.

Now, I've never been the general manager of a car dealership before, but firing an employee because of the sports logo emblazoned on his necktie seems rather small and petty.

Come on, general managers of car dealerships in the greater Chicago area. You lost. Now you have to take it like men.

From the Chicago Tribune:

John Stone said that when he showed up at work, general manager Jerry Roberts called him over to his office and then ordered him to take off the Packers tie or else he would be fired. Stone said he thought Roberts was joking and went back to work. An hour later, Stone said, Roberts came to the showroom floor and again demanded he take off the tie. When he didn't, he was fired, Stone said.

"I didn't know you could get fired for wearing a tie," said Stone, 34, of Chicago's Roseland neighborhood. "I'm supposed to dress up. I'm a car salesman."

The Tribune goes on to detail how general manager Jerry Roberts said the dealership had previously done promotions involving the Chicago Bears

"I don't feel that it was appropriate for him to go directly in contrast with an advertising campaign that we spent a lot of money on," Roberts told WGN reporter Judie Garcia.

Even if the manager's reasons are valid -- and I can understand his concerns about upsetting local customers or running contradictory to an advertising agreement with the Bears -- this still seems like something rational adults should have been able to talk through in about 30 seconds.

I hope Stone lands on his feet at a Packer-friendly dealership somewhere. He did say that he already has an interview with another dealership. And I hope he's replaced at the old dealership by a loyal Bears fan who couldn't sell Caleb Hanie a razor.

Tuesday's Three Stars: Pens, Bolts shutouts; Perry boarding debate

No. 1 Star: Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins

No Sidney Crosby and no Evgeni Malkin, but another Penguin voted into the NHL All-Star Game came through when they needed him. Fleury stopped 29 shots and Craig Adams had the lone goal in the Pens' 1-0 win against the New York Islanders. It was Fleury's second whitewash of the season.

No. 2 Star: Taylor Hall, Edmonton Oilers

The rookie tied the game with the Phoenix Coyotes with a power-play goal in the third period -- the Oilers' second in their last 54 chances. Later, after the teams traded goals, Hall's pass set up Dustin Penner in the slot for the game-winner with 22 seconds left in regulation. Edmonton topped the Coyotes, 4-3, to end a 5-game losing streak. The game-winner:

No. 3 Star: Dwayne Roloson, Tampa Bay Lightning

The Bolts keeper made 26 saves for his third shutout in 10 games, as the Lightning blanked the Toronto Maple Leafs., 2-0. Simon Gagne and Teddy Purcell scored during a 17-shot barrage in the first period against the Leafs, who have lost three in a row.

Honorable mention: Mike Weaver's second of the season (41 games apart) at 11:41 of the third period gave the Florida Panthers and Tomas Vokoun (32 saves) a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers. Rostislav Olesz had a goal and an assist; Keaton Ellerby scored his first NHL goal for the Panthers. ... Chris Pronger had four assists while Danny Briere scored his 26th and  Jeff Carter scored his 23rd of the season, as the Philadelphia Flyers rolled the Montreal Canadiens, 5-2, in Philly. Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves. ... Niklas Backstrom made 31 saves while Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Chuck Kobasew had a goal and an assist in the Minnesota Wild's 4-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Patrick Sharp had his 26th goal in defeat. ...  More Jonas Hiller magic: His 35 saves and Teemu Selanne's goal and an assist led Anaheim to a 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Jason Blake had the game-winner in the third. ... Finally, check out the Paul Coffey act from Shaonne Morrison last night for the Buffalo Sabres in overtime, rushing to the net and surprising the Ottawa Senators with the game-winner, his first goal as a Sabre and in 60 games. Buffalo won, 3-2, as Paul Byron had his first NHL goal.

Did you know? Pronger last had four assists Dec. 31, 2005, for Edmonton at Calgary. (AP)

Dishonorable mention: A couple of refereeing blunders around the crease. In Ottawa, Nick Foligno collided with Ryan Miller as Sergei Gonchar scored on the power play. Said Miller: "They said the puck was in before I was interfered with. ... I obviously strongly disagree with that version of what happened on the ice, and I let them know that." ... In Chicago, Jonathan Toews had a goal kept off the board in the third period after the officials ruled the play was whistled dead. ... Brent Seabrook was a minus-3 for Chicago. ... Anaheim scored two power play goals early on a Derek Dorsett boarding call on Corey Perry (no video of the hit yet). Said Dorsett after the game to Puck-Rakers:

"Perry's a 215-, 220-pound guy. He plays a physical game, a power-forward game," Dorsett said. "I think he went down pretty easy. Maybe I should have let up. I haven't seen the replay. Perry went down the tunnel for 20-30 seconds, and he was back on the power play. He played about a minute and a half on that power play, so how hurt was he?"

Said Perry, on a potential suspension for Dorsett: "I didn't turn or anything. ... I had no idea he was coming. We'll see what happens."

11 Great '[TV Show] in 60 Seconds' Videos

Filed under:

Watching Landline TV's 'Dexter' in 60 Seconds' video reminded us how much we enjoy the 'In 60 Seconds' format.

The phenomenon really took off on YouTube with a number of movie plots edited down to one minute. Full television series aren't as simple to cut down with so many characters and story arcs each season. However, there are some excellent ones out there and we unearthed 11 of the best.

The tone of the videos vary greatly -- some are meant to be informative, others humorous. They are created from actual clips, or re-enactments, or animation, or even feline theatre. A few focus on a specific character, or season, and some portray the show's broader themes. You'll enjoy all of them, and leave a little more educated.

Impotent CONCACAF To Plead For Fourth World Cup Spot

concacafRemember back in high school when student government candidates would promise things they had absolutely no hope of delivering -- a soda machine in the cafeteria, the extra parking spaces, early release on football Fridays?

Well, it appears that Jack Warner is running for class president.

The December World Cup vote exposed the CONCACAF chief and his fellow FIFA executive committee members, American Chuck Blazer and Guatemala's Rafael Salguero, as nothing more than small-time gangsters, able to hold sway in their own little fiefdom but inconsequential at the varsity level.

Video: Jeremy Roenick and most awkward Byfuglien interview ever

There are some basic problems and several sphincter-clenching moments in this red carpet interview between the NHL Network's Jeremy Roenick and Kevin Weekes and Atlanta Thrashers defenseman Dustin Byfuglien. Remember: d-e-f-e-n-s-e-m-a-n.

In which Jeremy Roenick assumes Dustin Byfuglien can rap. Take a gander:

To recap:

• Weekes calls him a forward.

• Weekes' microphone cuts out.

• Roenick has "to go on record" about his feelings that it was the "stupidest thing a coach could ever do" to put Byfuglien on defense, and then asks Byfuglien how he felt when this decision was made. You can be excused for thinking this was headed towards an apology, though that is a destination sadly never reached.

• Roenick offers Byfuglien the microphone and asks him for a "quick rap." Byfuglien: "No. I'm a country boy." How odd that it's assumed Dustin Byfuglien can spit rhymes. Maybe because he plays in Atlanta.

• Weekes' microphone cuts out. Again.

Mr. Byfuglien, you're a good sport and a snappy dresser.

Brett Favre's sister arrested in a Mississippi meth lab

Things are still breaking bad for Brett Favre. His younger sister Brandi was arrested Wednesday in a condo complex that also served as a meth lab.

Sgt. Abe Long of Hancock County told SunHerald.com that Brandi Favre was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and generating hazardous waste. Both charges are felonies. She was among five people arrested.

Undercover agents bought methamphetamine from two of the suspects, which led to the raid at the condo. Agents found meth cooking in the bathtub, made the arrests, then took the suspects to the "Hancock County Barn" for decontamination. They are now behind bars.

That's not good news for anybody, of course, but Brett Favre really didn't need any more bad news. The man had a disastrous 2010, and now his family is cooking up an equally horrific 2011.

In the past year, Favre's Vikings performed woefully below expectations and finished the season 6-10. Favre's consecutive games streak was snapped after he suffered a shoulder injury, which was then followed quickly by a nasty concussion. Favre was also accused of sending lewd voicemails and pictures of his genitals to a Jets employee during his time as a Jet, and was fined $50,000 by the NFL for not cooperating with the league's investigation.

Obviously, a family tragedy trumps all that. And just to be clear, this is no reflection on Favre whatsoever. A lot of people out there know what it's like to have a family member who can't or won't be helped.

Best of luck to members of the Favre family. I hope something goes right for them soon.

Thursday Senior Bowl Notes -- Morning Practice

MOBILE, Ala. -- While some will tell you that the late-week practices aren't as interesting because the contact lessens and many of the NFL personnel people have left town by Thursday morning, there's still a lot to be revealed around the special teams practices. Specifically, on Thursday morning, the goal-line practice scenarios allowed a different level of evaluation for many of the players on hand.

Of the three north quarterbacks, Nevada's Colin Kaepernick has shown the most steady development from day to day. On Thursday morning, he surprised with his quickness on a quarterback draw and threw a couple of beautiful downfield passes. Those included the throw of the day, a deep sideline throw to East Carolina's Dwayne Harris, who dropped the ball in the end zone. And after a rough early stretch on his touch with short passes, Kaepernick started throwing nice fades in goal-line situations. On the down side, he threw what should have been a pick to North Carolina cornerback Kendrick Burney (who's been one of the defensive stars of the week), which Burney dropped and subsequently disciplined himself with 10 push-ups. Kaepernick is rising at the right time and starting to put it all together.

Washington's Jake Locker, on the other hand, is coming to the end of his Senior Bowl week pretty much as he came in -- as a quarterback with nonpareil physical ability and highly questionable decision-making ability and accuracy. He sold a beautiful hard play fake on one goal-line play, and then overthrew Boise State speedster Titus Young in the end zone. He later had a nice quick throw to Young that the receiver dropped -- it was that king of day for Locker. He tried to hit San Diego State's Vincent Brown on a quick out, but overthrew the easy pass. When he rolled out of the pocket and ran, he blazed past the linebackers trying to chase him, but in rolling out looking to make a quick pass from the red zone, he couldn't throw into the tight window and just threw it away instead. There's a lot to work on here; Locker will have a lot to prove beyond the Pro Day and scouting combine process.

Iowa's Ricky Stanzi is also a work in progress, showing little dynamism or accuracy when rolling out- - he seems to be really gangly on the run. He throws high, and the lack of velocity he has on intermediate throws allows defenders to converge far too quickly. This could prevent him from being a good thrower against zone defenses; a major liability at the NFL level. He did hit Dwayne Harris on a nice crossing pattern, his best throw of the day, but overall, Stanzi has been relatively unimpressive this week.

Among the linebackers, Oregon's Casey Matthews impressed with a goal-line pick; something that personnel execs will like to see from a guy who blitzed so often in college. Like his brother, he may surprise when dropping back at the next level.

Washington's Mason Foster had my eye Thursday; I think he could be a very good linebacker in zone defenses where nickel is frequently used. He reminds me of Indianapolis' Clint Session in that he's as good going backward as he is running downhill. Not an incredibly physical guy, not a dominant tackler, but he's good at covering tight ends on crossing patterns, passes off receivers well in zone, and he has excellent redirect when the play goes away from him.

Also talked to Boston College's Mark Herzlich about his recovery from cancer and how much he learned about himself and his love of the game. More on his and other players later, but we're off to afternoon practice!

Seattle Seahawks Fans and Why We are the Only 12th Man Around

Disclaimer: This article is something that I have been working on for quite awhile. I am a Marine stationed in North Carolina but was born and raised in Auburn, WA. I was recently injured in Afghanistan and was lucky enough to make it back alive. This is simply the musings and rants of a man obsessed with his team.

A fan's outlook before Super Bowl XL, our chance to finally show the world that we are ready to become a champion and our outpost in the Northwest is a power player in the NFL, the ultimate high.

A fan's outlook after Super Bowl XL: The living room looks like a war zone. A hole in the TV where the remote flew through as an offensive pass interference is called in the end zone.

Chips, dip, chairs, a lamp, tables, beer cans and anything else that wasn't bolted down has now somehow blockaded itself in the corner of the room as if cowering from the wrath that was unleashed upon the room as the clock ticked down to those final seconds and the myth became a reality that the best and only chance that the beloved Seattle Seahawks have actually lost their only chance and becoming a World Champion.

In the years to come the team goes through so many changes a timeline and graph of all the players and personnel changes in the organization won't even do it justice.

Losses pile up as the injured Pro Bowlers from the glory years of five straight NFC West championships either retire or move on to greener pastures. Some decided to stick it out only to draw the ire and wrath of the fans who once cheered him in his greatness as he suffers injury after injury behind a depleted and pathetic offensive line.

Coaches get fired as often as a 4-year-old changes his mind about what kind of ice cream he wants. Fans lose heart yet still cheer their team on with every breath and dedicate their hard earned money to buying the new rookies jersey even when the house is going into foreclosure.

Half way around the world a Marine from a Seattle suburb walks through a little village in Afghanistan and finds security in knowing that when he gets home he will be blessed to watch his Hawks as they attempt to recover from a dismal year.

So what is the fan left with after watching the team struggle and get lambasted in the media for being the first and only team to ever make the playoffs with a losing record? One word...HOPE!

The year that was 2010 was a hard one to watch. Starting off strong and winning a few games no one expects you to win is a great beginning to a season but it also brings false hope. Seattle fans were on the edge of their seats thinking that maybe the man hire away from the devil school in Southern California will do the unthinkable and turn this team into a contender in one year.

Realistically, it won't happen and everyone knows it won't but just like that Marine over seas who has no idea if he is coming home the hope is there. The season wears on and the inevitable happens—injuries. Losses once again begin to pile up and that hope is starting to fade. Another losing record is starting to become a reality.

Then as the morning paper is opened up the standings reveal something completely mind boggling, the Seattle Seahawks are in first place in the division. This can't be! There is a light at the end of the tunnel and it seems to be getting brighter.

This all takes place as the same Marine is finally back on the soil of this great country of ours. He knows that even though he isn't the same as when he left that he will always have a future, unlike so many others.

Finally being back in the great State of Washington the Marine is lucky to attend a game in Qwest Field where he feels at home. The game was against the Atlanta Falcons and the score well it wasn't pretty but at the end of the day there is still a chance at achieving the elusive .500 record and a possible playoff berth.

It comes down to this. St. Louis and Seattle. In the eyes of a fan the game is out of reach. Hasselbeck is injured. Whitehurst will start. Sam Bradford, the future Rookie of the Year, will finish this season off with one of the greatest turnarounds in NFL history.

As the game starts, you can feel it. The energy the crowd believes and the players now that this game is in their reach. The stats and the film may show an ugly poor played game but it doesn't matter because the Hawks are crowned the NFC West Champions! We did it.

The fans have willed the players to the playoffs. No matter who we face in the first round, we have a home playoff game and that means the noisy confines of Qwest Field will rock once again with the heart and soul of the 12th Man.

The opponent is the defending Super Bowl champion Saints.

The media and all the experts give the team no chance. The Saints will walk all over the Seahawks. Drew Brees and Co. will put up 500 yards and 50 points. This Seattle team is the worst ever playoff team. They don't even deserve to be in the playoffs yet they are hosting a game.

Headlines around the country demand a revision to the playoff seeds. A rule must be made regarding undeserving teams from making the playoffs. Even local sports writers doubt the chances that their supposed hometown team has in the game.

No faith and no respect something a fan in the Northwest is used to.

January 8, 2011.

Qwest Field.

Seattle vs. New Orleans.

Twenty-two-of-35, 242 passing yards, 4 TDs.

Nineteen attempts, 131 rushing yards, 1 TD.

Most would think these are the stats of Saints, but not on this historic night in Seattle.

Those stat lines belong to none other than Seattle's own Matthew Hasselbeck and Marshawn Lynch.

Look back at this night and one play will come to mind. Is it possible that the earthquake caused by Seattle fans due to the countless years of being seen as the little brother in the NFL? Could it be that through all these years this one play summed up the truth about the most caring and loyal fans in the country?

Seattle fans everywhere now know that the spotlight is on them.

No longer are the Seahawks the laughingstock of the league. No longer are the fans seen as stuck up and cold.

Now the 12th Man is here.

The noise begins as the 12th Man flag is raised by a local hero and doesn't end til the final seconds tick off the clock no matter the final score.

Opposing teams will say that they are scared to play at Qwest Field due to the noise, but the 12th Man knows that teams aren't the only thing scared of us.

The ground shakes as we cheer on our team. All around the field the earth begins to move as it shakes in fear and awe at the passion that is the 12th Man. Truly we are the mighty. Truly we have become the epitome of sports fans worldwide.

So I say to you fellow Hawks fans, are you ready?

Are you ready to do it all again? Are you ready scare away opponents and even the earth itself? Are you ready to see the Seahawks raise another banner high into the rafters at Qwest Field? Are you ready to start this next year off as the reigning NFC West champions?

The answer to all these questions is a simple yes.

The real question is can our team build on the success of this past year and create a team that will become a dynasty? Can our front office bring in the pieces needed to make this team a contender again?

From one 12th Man to another all we can do is show up every Sunday and give this team our all in hopes that they fulfill our dreams of bringing the Lombardi Trophy home to Seattle.

My hat is off to you for sticking by this team and believing that no matter what they will achieve the greatness that we know is possible.

GO HAWKS!

Did the Patriots have their own Sal Alosi?

If the reports that came out last weekend are correct, we may not be done with the whole "illegal special teams wall" thing. We of course know that New York Jets strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi was caught tripping Miami Dolphins special teams gunner Nolan Carroll -- with malice aforethought -- during the 2010 season.

Now, it appears that the New England Patriots may have done the same thing ... which is exactly what Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff said was happening after the NFL fined the Jets $100,000 for Alosi's actions. As FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reported over the weekend, one Patriots player can be seen on video, trying to trip a Jets gunner, during the New York-New England Week 2 game:

Glazer also said that the Jets found this out when they signed an (unnamed) ex-Pats player to their practice squad, and that player told the Jets' coaching staff that "when we were with the Patriots, we did the exact same thing, and almost got you guys."

[Related: NFL star QB snubs cancer patient]

Glazer points out that if the Jets had sent that video to the league, it might have been the Pats who were fined instead of the Jets, but as much as I respect Glazer's work, I think he's missing an important thread of the narrative here. If the Jets knew that other teams were doing this, that makes Alosi even dumber for trying it himself. It would be as if another team or individual -- maybe even someone who was on the team at the time -- tried a "Spygate" end run after everything that happened in 2007.

Oh, wait -- someone DID try that. And he's out of the league right now.

The NFL has had no official statement on this news, but you can bet it's not at all happy about it. In an era in which Roger Goodell and his henchmen are going overboard to "protect the shield" and keep the NFL's reputation of integrity in all things (at least as the league office perceived it) on the up and up. I remember Jimmy Johnson's comments about Spygate right after it happened; he said something to the effect that we don't want to know how many teams are doing this.

[Related: Newspaper's funny flub about NFL game]

And it seems that whenever there's a scandal like this, it's never just one team or one individual.

Houston Marathon 2011: Why Have Marathons Become So Popular?

Houston Marathon 2011: Why Have Marathons Become So Popular?

Running a marathon is something that most people didn't do. However, in recent years, the popularity of marathons has exploded and become more accessible to the common person.

One of the reasons is the fitness culture that we live in. People are more focused on healthy living and running and completing a marathon is something that is a badge of honor and a statement to the level of fitness that you have as a person.

Everyone wants to be able to say they ran a marathon and brag to their friends about doing it, that never hurt the popularity of a sport. Not only that, but with charities getting behind these events, giving back to the community and supporting causes for less fortunate people or trying to find cures for illnesses is something that a lot of people support and motivates people to try and makes things easier for the world around them.

Would you ever run a marathon?

Running a marathon is one of the hardest things you can do and is a major accomplishment that we've seen done more often by people like you and me.

There's only a thousand Kobe Bryants: London laps up NBA's big star | Paolo Bandini

The LA Lakers No24 drew a full house to the O2 Arena but injury meant he could only play for only six minutes

Tube strikes and traffic jams be damned, Kobe Bryant was coming to London's O2 Arena. Not just one of him, in fact, but thousands, in all shapes and sizes. Tall Kobes, short Kobes, skinny Kobes, fat Kobes, female Kobes and Kobes of all different ethnicities. Some who live just down the road and others who had travelled from the other side of the globe. All meandering up the walkway that leads to the Arena's entrance, stopping to take the odd photograph or gawp at an oversized picture of... Kobe.

This is the fourth consecutive year in which the NBA has hosted a pre-season game in London, but the first in which it has brought its biggest star along for the ride. High profile players have featured ? from Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and a Boston Celtics team gearing up for a championship run in 2007 to Great Britain's own Luol Deng this time last year ? but not the one Britain really wanted to see. "Kobe is, like, the David Beckham of basketball," offered one starry-eyed teen as he queued for the shirt that would transform him, too, into No24.

Except that unlike Becks, Kobe is still at the top of his game. Last year he averaged 29.2 points through the play-offs as he led the Lakers to a second consecutive title and the fifth of his career. He was the top scorer in all but one of seven games against Boston during their finals series. He also happens to earn more than Beckham too, not that there is any animosity over such matters. The pair are close enough that one of Beckham's Milan shirts takes pride of place in Bryant's locker at the Lakers' Staples Center home.

Bryant, of course, was never going to be in championship-winning form for this, the Lakers' first pre-season game, and in the end was restricted to just over six minutes on the court as he sought to protect both a knee that is recovering from summer surgery and a fractured finger that he chose not to have operated on. A sensible decision, perhaps, though still a slightly disappointing one for an audience who did not see him find the basket in that spell.

There could have been some reaction if he had. The crowds at these games in London have always arrived with an enthusiasm verging on boisterousness and this was no different. Cheerleaders were cheered, players roared at and two fans jeered mercilessly after they failed to identify the Neighbours theme tune when summoned to the floor for a time-out challenge.

Nevertheless, there was no disguising the fact that the greatest volume all evening had been achieved when Kobe emerged on to the floor. When he rose for a jump shot two minutes into the contest, hundreds more Kobes rose with him only to crash back to their seats as the ball clanged away off the rim. He would miss two further shots, both from three-point range, before departing.

The notion that he could be back in London soon had already been shot down in a pre-game press conference held by the NBA commissioner, David Stern, and the AEG CEO Tim Leiweke. AEG has close ties with the Lakers, running the Staples Center, while Leiweke is on the team's board of directors, but when asked if LA could become regulars at the O2 (also run by AEG), his response was immediate: "Not gonna happen" as long as Phil Jackson remains coach. Stern was more circumspect, insisting variety would keep things fresh.

There was mercifully little discussion in the same conference of whether the NBA could ever establish a franchise in these parts. The question was raised, but only briefly. It has been posed so often as to become tedious. The response was the same as ever; Stern suggesting the most realistic scenario would see several teams formed at once in Europe to create a new conference before adding that nothing was likely to happen on this front for at least a decade.

The fans were far more concerned with the here and now. The first chants of "We Want Kobe" began late in the third-quarter and there were further appeals throughout the final period. Before the end there was even a smattering of boos. On the bench Bryant grinned, but even with his team trailing, Jackson was unmoved. He is paid to win championships, not pre-season games, and he will need a healthy Bryant if he is to secure a third of those in a row.

And so the Timberwolves won, 111-92, leaving the would-be Kobes in the stands to swallow their disappointment and pack off home. Many will be back for the two regular season games between the New Jersey Nets and Toronto Raptors in March, though it is worth noting that while tickets sold out for tonight's game in "literally a day", according to Leiweke, there is still some availability for those two. A meaningful game, it seems, is less important to fans than a meaningful player.

The five most valuable players of Wild Card Weekend

Matt Hasselbeck, QB, Seattle Seahawks.

I did not see that coming. It wasn't until Wednesday that Pete Carroll had even decided that Hasselbeck was a better option than Charlie flippin' Whitehurst. Hasselbeck hit us with the old stuff on Saturday, though: 272 yards, four touchdowns, and a 113.0 passer rating.

My favorite throw was this one. Hasselbeck wanted a hitch-and-go to Cameron Morrah, saw that it was going to be open (courtesy of Roman Harper), but also had pressure in his grill and had to throw it before he wanted to. Since he couldn't wait, he had to make the ball do the waiting for him, and he hung it up in the air like a beach ball.

It took an extra beat to get where it was headed, landed perfectly in Morrah's arms and got the Seahawks into scoring range. Tremendous throw.

Chris Carr, CB, Baltimore Ravens.

I really thought the Ravens would struggle to cover Dwayne Bowe. Struggle, they did not. Bowe's numbers, in fact, made Reggie Wayne's look Herculean by comparison. Chris Carr, along with Josh Wilson, had Bowe on lockdown all day.

While we're here, I offer my applause to Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison, too. The difference between the defensive effort in the first half and second half was remarkable. They went from good to impenetrable. Jamaal Charles carried seven times for 87 yards in the first half; two times for minus-5 yards in the second. The Chiefs had 136 total yards in the first half; 25 in the second half.

Marshawn Lynch, RB, Seattle Seahawks.

That happened. That was real.

James Starks, RB, Green Bay Packers.

If the Packers can put a legitimate running game next to Aaron Rodgers, their offense becomes very difficult to contain. I don't know if this is something that James Starks can do consistently, but if he can, I believe it makes the Packers the best team in the NFC.

Darrelle Revis, CB, New York Jets.

I know Reggie Wayne thinks he should have gotten the ball more, but when you're covered, you're covered. Don't think it was insignificant, either. On the big third-and-6 right before Adam Vinatieri kicked the field goal with too much time left, Manning found himself going to Blair White. The throw ended up incomplete, with Manning expressing some displeasure with White on the sidelines afterwards.

Honorable mention:

• Mike Mayock, color analyst, NBC.

Mayock's commentary during the Seattle/New Orleans game was some of the best I've heard all year. He's straightforward, honest, insightful, unafraid to criticize, and entertaining on top of it all. That the NFL Network has Mayock under its noses, and instead chooses to let Matt Millen call Thursday night games is infuriating.

Islanders put the screws to Evgeni Nabokov with suspension

The New York Islanders suspended goalie Evgeni Nabokov today for failing to report to the team after they claimed him on waivers. Hanging up on the team's general manager probably didn't help matters.

The 35-year-old former San Jose Sharks and KHL goalie signed a contract worth peanuts with the Detroit Red Wings: a pro-rated $570,000 one-year deal that made him awfully appealing to teams once he hit the waiver wire; especially teams like the Islanders, given the instability of their goaltending situation.

Cap Geek reports that Nabokov won't be paid or count against the cap, but what are the real repercussions for this suspension? As Bob McKenzie wrote on TSN:

The Islanders are within their rights to suspend Nabokov. That means Nabokov doesn't get paid and has no other options in terms of playing elsewhere. He just sits. That scenario could simply carry on for the balance of the season. End of story.

Or maybe not. The Islanders could appeal to the NHL to "toll" the contract, which essentially means push it to next year. In that case, Nabokov would then "owe" the Islanders a year and Nabokov would not necessarily become a free agent on July 1.

So in the span of a year, Nabokov would have gone from having the freedom to sign a $6-million per year contract in the KHL to being shackled to the Islanders for less than what P.A. Parenteau's making.

You think he reports to the Islanders now?

LeBron James accused of 'shameful display of selfishness' by Cavaliers

? LeBron James called 'self-titled former King' after Miami move
? Majority owner says Cleveland will win NBA title before James

The owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers has called LeBron James selfish for his decision to seek a championship with the Miami Heat and promised the hard-luck city an NBA title before the six-times All-Star gets one.

In a letter to Cavaliers fans, the team's majority owner, Dan Gilbert, said he was disappointed that James opted to join his fellow All-Stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami and felt the nationally televised announcement was inappropriate.

"If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our 'motivation' to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels," Gilbert wrote.

"I personally guarantee that the Cleveland Cavaliers will win an NBA championship before the self-titled former 'King' wins one ... you can take it to the bank."

James opted to deliver his decision during an hour-long programme on cable network after weeks of speculation on whether he would stick with his hometown Cavaliers or jump to one of the other five teams who courted his services.

His decision dealt a major blow to a city that has not celebrated a professional sports championship since 1964 and has developed a widely known reputation for failing in key games.

Without James on the payroll, the Cavaliers can now look to bolster their roster by signing players from what is regarded as one of the deepest pools of free agents. "I promise you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only: delivering you the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue," wrote Gilbert.

The Heat, who last celebrated an NBA title in 2006, were clearly in a much more upbeat mood as the team usher in a new chapter.

"We are thrilled that LeBron James and Chris Bosh have decided to come to Miami to join forces with our truly great player, Dwyane Wade," the Heat coach, Pat Riley, said in a statement.

"We are looking forward to the opportunity of building something that our fans in Miami will be proud of for a long, long time. The journey is just beginning."

'Bones' Season 6, Episode 11 Recap

Heather Taffet, known as The Gravedigger, makes her appearance for an appeals hearing on this week's episode of 'Bones.'['Bones': 'The Bullet in the Brain']

As Professor Moriarty is to Sherlock Holmes and Lex Luthor is to Superman, Heather Taffet, known as the Gravedigger, is the arch-nemesis of Booth, Bones and the Squints.

Over the last few years, this former prosecutor has tortured various members of the team by burying them alive in a car and leaving them to fend for themselves on an old naval ship ready to be sunk. During her trial, Taffet tried to manipulate the close-knit group of law enforcement officers and scientists in order to wear them down and possibly exonerate her from all of the murders she committed.

Even in this week's episode of 'Bones,' she tried to dig deep down into the psyche of one of the team members to get him to distrust himself at her appeal hearing. However, when all seemed lost, something happened that changed the Gravedigger's disposition ...

Experience the hairy, awkward glory of the 1990 NHL All-Star Game, featuring first-ever skills competition

The 1990 NHL All-Star Game is fondly remembered for being Doug Smail's only appearance in the midseason classic and, to a much lesser degree, Mario Lemieux's 4-goal performance in front of Pittsburgh Penguins fans at the Igloo -- three of them on his first three shots.

But as the NHL All-Star Game once again undergoes a massive overhaul for the 2011 edition, we thought it appropriate to look back 21 years to another slate of dramatic alterations to the All-Star Game format.

Consider this: The 41st NHL All-Star Game was the first to feature an actual All-Star Weekend like we know it today. They brought in the Heroes of Hockey game, which was a kind way of saying "old timers'". But more importantly, it was the first appearance of the Super Skills Competition, featuring shot accuracy, hardest shot and the goalie competition.

Plus, because of the expanded format, the game was played on a Sunday afternoon and live on NBC ... which, to show you how far things have progressed for hockey, was Wade Belak hat-trick rare, if you smell what we're cooking.

Here's a glorious early newsreel on the 1990 All-Star Weekend, with more synth fanfare than you can handle:

Coming up, some more video from the game and a look at some of our favorite hockey hair from the All-Star participants.

And here ... we ... go.

Tonight, the role of Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings will be played by the star of such films as "Anti-Trust" and "MacGruber," Ryan Phillippe.

And now, here are your starting lineups for the 1990 NHL All-Star Game:

Booing Brian Propp of the Philadelphia Flyers. Oh, Patrick Division, how we miss thee ...

At a time when Ovechkin vs. Crosby fatigue is at a high water mark, interesting to see Mario vs. Gretzky far from played out. Different levels of media saturation 21 years ago, of course.

If you've ever wondered why some people claim the National Hockey League All-Star Game has lost some of its luster, perhaps this will help: 1990 featured Wayne Gretzky vs. Patrick Roy in a skills competition. No disrespect to either, but Anze Kopitar vs. Carey Price just doesn't rise to that level of awesome.

"Right Wing, No. 16, a man who can't help but hopelessly eye-[expletive] the camera, Brett Hull!"

Going ... going ... going ...

NHL officials were stunned when, right after the introductions, a marmoset that had been gently sleeping inside the front of Mario's hair climbed down and scurried into the bowels of the Igloo ... where it was eventually mistaken for a terrorist and killed by Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Here's Mario Lemieux's 4-goal game and more from the 1990 ASG:

Edited down to nine minutes, the game seemed pretty exciting. Probably wasn't.

Ladies and gentleman, Doc Emrick's suave, fully-coiffed older brother Surgeon Emrick.

And finally, there's NHL announcer Bill Clement, whose hair ... looks exactly the same 21 years later. Creep-y.

So long, everyone. Stay tuned for the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic here on NBC.

Tillman has time for disciplinary calisthenics vs. Seahawks

The Seahawks didn't do a whole lot to push the Bears on Sunday afternoon, so it was up to the Bears to find a way to push themselves.

For cornerback Charles Tillman, that meant a pause in the action for some self-discipline. Here he is, knocking out a set of push-ups after letting what should have been an easy interception bounce off his hands.

When it's 21-0 and the opposition has barely put up a fight, I guess you do whatever you have to do to keep yourself engaged and interested. Lou Brown and Willie Mays Hayes approve.

San Francisco Giants Closer Brian Wilson On George Lopez: "I'm a Sea Man"

Over the past year, the nation has gotten a chance to see the hilarious actions of Brian Wilson over and over again. His appearances on the Jim Rome Show and the Letterman Show seemed to be his best material. Looks like we were wrong.

Wilson has made mention of his altered ego, a sex crazed maniac bent on domination. He calls this alternate personality "The Machine." It looks as if the Machine has struck again, and this time on the George Lopez Show.

Some may find his tactics rather childish, but I however think he sounds like Zack Galifianakas from "The Hangover." Try closing your eyes and telling me his voice doesn't strike a resemblance.

Wilson has become one of the most popular players in the league because of his quirky attitude, and a main reason why a TV show is in the works, documenting the lives of the players on and off the field. It could get a little dicey should they choose to follow Brian Wilson off the field. I wonder what the Machine does on the daily once he gets home...

If you haven't seen this clip, it's a must. He basically eludes to the fact that he engaged in sexual massages in Thailand, all while dressed as a "sea-man." It's pointless trying to explain, it's something you kind of just have to see for yourself.

As the Giants prepare for the 2011 campaign, it's nice to have a guy like Wilson bring some comedy to the club. Lord knows the awkward part of the team is solidified in Aubrey Huff's demeanor.

It will be interesting to watch if Wilson can have the same type of year in 2011, or if things will start to go south should he let himself, err, I mean the "The Machine" get frustrated.

The Giants are looking for a lot of the same from their bullpen, and hoping for some bats that were absent last season to make a comeback. Pablo Sandoval is one of the hot topics at the moment, and should he continue to lose the weight, he will be back in 2009 form.

If you haven't seen his appearances on the Rome show, you need to find that next. This is a good start if you've somehow been living under a rock for the last couple of months.

Bart Scott is yelling at Sal Palantonio for some reason

The New York Jets, having taken on the personality of their head coach, are fueled by taking things personally as well as a high degree of bravado.

Here's linebacker Bart Scott, who played an outstanding game against the Patriots, putting both qualities on display.

Aside from being really angry/happy, I'm not really sure what the hell Bart Scott is talking about. I can't recall anyone saying the Patriots had a better defense than the Jets, and I don't know why anyone would believe that. And as far as the talking of crap goes, I know it went back and forth, but I feel confident in saying that most of it originated with the Jets. The Jets talk more trash than anyone in the league, don't they?

Not that I'd ever say any of that to Bart Scott. He plays emotionally, and wherever he gets his fuel, it works for him and it works for the Jets. Also, I wouldn't want him to yell at me like that.

I just hope he doesn't stay up tonight, calling Sal Palantonio's home phone at all hours of the night, just screaming into the receiver about disrespect. It seems like he wants to.

Gracias, Pro Football Talk.
