NFL Mock Draft: The Dallas Cowboys Need to Add Some Royalty

The Cowboys should be smart and just take Prince Amukamara at No.9

The Dallas Cowboys scare me.

See, they've got a top 10 pick, they have so many needs to fill, but I've got this nervous feeling in my stomach that they'll botch this. That they'll get cute, trade down for more picks, or go for the best player on the board even if it's something they don't need.

This isn't difficult. The Cowboys should take all of five seconds here and simply announce they're taking Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara. Done. Finished. End of story.

Here's why I'm worried, though. First off, Jerry Jones has said before that he's not concerned about the cornerback position. Either, he's totally bluffing and playing everyone (very likely), or he's completely delusional and was in his happy place during the entire 2010 season.

Let's backtrack and look at the facts for a minute. Dallas was 26th last year in pass defense, allowing just over 243 yards per game. Terence Newman isn't what he used to be, Mike Jenkins certainly isn't an elite level corner and their backups (Bryan McCann and Orlando Scandrick) aren't totally reliable either.

Aaron Rodgers threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns against Dallas. Rex Grossman topped that with 322 yards, and then Drew Brees beat them all on Thanksgiving with 352.

Most drafts have the Cowboys taking Prince, but then I saw some that had them selecting USC offensive lineman Tyron Smith. Yes, they do need to fix that line as well, but some rankings don't even have Smith as the No.1 lineman in the draft. Nate Solder of Colorado and Wisconsin's Gabe Carimi had been battling for that spot.

"Amukamara ran under 4.4 on some watches in Indy and (Cowboys defensive coordinator) Rob Ryan needs what his brother has in New York -- two cover corners," wrote NFL.com's Pat Kirwan, who also had the Cowboys taking Amukamara.

Recent drafts have been a colossal failure for the Cowboys. That's incredible, considering they used to be among the best when it came to drafting players.

If Tony Romo returns 100 percent healthy and they make the right moves in free agency and in the draft, Dallas should be in great shape. Part of that means getting Prince.

It's not difficult. This is just common sense.
