Video: Welcoming back the Winnipeg Jets in style

As these things go, this fan-made Winnipeg Jets tribute is pretty darn good, tying together the history of the NHL in the city with the relocation of the Atlanta Thrashers:

Nicely done, especially the end with the fans celebrating outside the official announcement. It almost convinced me that Winnipeg Jets was the right name for the team.

Almost.

I know Leahy stated his case as for why True North went in the right direction with resurrecting the Jets, and the nostalgic kick of connecting this franchise with the legacy of the one that's playing in Glendale is a heartstring-tugger. It was awesome to hear "Let's Go Jets!" echoing from the cheap seats at the NHL draft, like some kind of fan invasion.

But the salient points for me are that (a) that franchise still exists and acknowledges its history as the Jets and (b) that, in the end, it's all going to be the city's hockey legacy anyway. If they were the Manitoba Moose, there was still going to be a third of the crowd (or greater) in Jets gear regardless. So just start a new legacy; hey, maybe even one that has a Stanley Cup banner someday!

That said, every Winnipeg fan I asked at the NHL draft about the Jets moniker said they were jacked that it's the name, and in some cases said it's the only name they'd accept. And telling a team what it should or should not be named is a bit like telling a franchise which numbers should or should not be retired ? in the end, it's a personal choice and not one influenced by outside forces.

The fans wanted the Winnipeg Jets, they got the Winnipeg Jets.
