As part of their massive rebranding effort, the Tampa Bay Lightning have produced a Jumbotron music video for "Hockey Paradise" by Seven Williams & Brandt Brothers that casts the Lighting fan experience as a breezy, boozy bit of country rock that's a cheeseburger away from Margaritaville.
And having been to a game or two over the years, this isn't entirely inaccurate ...
Here's "Hockey Paradise," featuring the team's new love-it-or-loathe-it logo, a pretty lady or 10 and absurd lyrics.
We had some trouble determining our favorite silly lyric in "Hockey Paradise." The contenders:
"Hot summer sun/and hockey all the way." (In the summer?)
"Body surfin' and body checks/power plays and warm sunsets." (Sunset not exactly evocative of what you're looking for in a power play.)
"Fishin' in the mornin'/and Zambonis at night." (Please tell us they aren't powering the ice resurfacing machine with grouper.)
"Breakaways and hat tricks/and margaritas goin' down." (OK, in fact, these are actually three of our favorite things.)
No, it has to be:
"We're gonna hold the Stanley way up high."
No one calls it "The Stanley." It's the Cup. Or it's just Stanley. "The Stanley" is a power tool. You're singing about a power tool.
So give it a listen, wonder why they couldn't find a way to rhyme Teddy Purcell with "party like hell", and tell us, dear readers:
Pass or Fail: "Hockey Paradise," the Tampa Bay Lightning's country rock anthem.
