Agent: Burress ?doing great,' could be ready to play again

Drew Rosenhaus, the agent for currently jailed receiver Plaxico Burress, tweeted signs of encouragement about his client after recently visiting Burress in prison.

Just visited with client Plaxico Burress. He is doing great! He is running & lifting weights 5 days a week. He looks in terrific shape...less than a minute ago via Twitter for iPad

"He is in great spirits and is excited to be reunited with his family on June 6th," Rosenhaus went on to tweet of the day that Burress will be released after serving a nearly two-year sentence. "We talked at length about his future in the NFL & he can't wait to get back on the football field in 2011! He is mentally & physically strong right now and is looking forward to the future! He has set some great goals for his life on and off the field. Get ready to see him do some amazing things this year in all areas!"

In November of 2008, Burress suffered a self-inflicted bullet wound in a New York nightclub from a Glock pistol in his sweatpants. Indicted on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, and a single count of reckless endangerment in the second degree, Burress eventually accepted a plea bargain that would put him in prison for two years, with an additional two years of supervised release. He asked for and was denied work release in January of 2010.

When he is released, Burress will face a very different football world. The former Steelers and Giants receiver will ostensibly be a free agent, the Giants having cut ties with him long ago, but it isn't known whether the current labor war and potential lockout will have been resolved by that time. But former teammates with both the Steelers and Giants have said supportive things about Burress' return to those teams under the right circumstances, and the sense may be that, as with Michael Vick, that someone who paid his debt to society should have another chance to get his life right if he's still qualified to play the game.

It will be a while before we know whether Burress' NFL-readiness is just agent-speak on Rosenhaus' part, but it will be yet another point of interest in a very tumultuous NFL offseason.
