ACC Bubble Watch for Week of February 6

This article is also featured at All About Sports

Don't forget, college basketball's best rivalry is Wednesday, when Duke and North Carolina hook up again. Both teams have clearly established themselves as the ACC's two best teams.

A good win is any win over the RPI top 100, and a bad loss is any loss to a team ranked higher than the RPI 125.

RPI's come from realtimerpi.com

Locks

(9) Duke Blue Devils 21-2 (8-1)

Talk about putting a game behind you. Following the ugly loss at St. Johns, the Blue Devils rolled this week. They won by 18 at Maryland then crushed NC State 76-52.

Next Games: 2/9 North Carolina, 2/13 @ Miami

Good Wins: (50) Princeton, (62) Marquette, (38) Kansas St., (42) Michigan St, (58) Butler, (72) Miami, (43) UAB, (76) Maryland, (99)(41) Boston College, (76) Maryland

Bad Losses: None

(14) North Carolina Tar Heels 17-5 (7-1)

What weird week for North Carolina. They go on the road the road and win 106-74 at Boston College in one of the best ACC road performances of the year. Then, guard Larry Drew II left the program at the end of the week. The Heels were playing well, and while not a devastating loss, Drew was providing solid minutes.

Heels, at least in game one without Drew, say we don't need him in a double digit blowout of Florida State. I think they will be fine.

Next Games: 2/9 @Duke, 2/12 @Clemson

Good Wins: (95) Hofstra, (85) Charleston, (12) Kentucky, (60) Virginia Tech, (79) Clemson, (72) Miami, (41) Boston College (55) Florida State

Bad Losses: (160) Georgia Tech

Should be In

(41) Boston College Eagles 15-8 (5-4)

The Eagles very nearly played themselves on to the bubble. Their 32 point loss at home to North Carolina could have sent the sent the season into a tailspin. They recovered to get a critical 58-56 win over Virginia Tech.

Next Games: 2/8 @Clemson, 2/12 Maryland

Good Wins: (23) Texas A&M, (57) California, (94) Massachusetts, (96) Providence, (76) Maryland, (92) Bucknell, (60) Virginia Tech

Bad Losses: (157) Yale

(55) Florida State Seminoles 16-7 (6-3)

The Noles got a 85-61 win over hapless Wake Forest. The loss to UNC Sunday wasn't too big a deal. The Heels are red hot, and the Seminoles are still in solid shape for the Big Dance, especially with winnable games coming up this week.

Next Games: 2/10 @ Georgia Tech, 2/12 Virginia

Good Wins: (79) Clemson, (86) Baylor, (9) Duke, (72) Miami, (41) Boston College

Bad Losses: (282) Auburn

Bubble But In

(60) Virginia Tech Hokies 15-7 (5-4)

The Hokies didn't help their NCAA chances much this week, but they didn't worsen them. They got an important 77-69 win at NC State, but couldn't get a resume building win at Boston College. Last week, I think they were just out, this week just in, because of their RPI rising out of the 70s.  Good news for the Hokies is the schedule is in their favor the next two weeks.

Next Games: 2/13 Georgia Tech

Good Wins: (45) Oklahoma St, (46) Penn St., (55) Florida St., (76) Maryland, (72) Miami

Bad Losses: (139) Virginia, (160) Georgia Tech

Bubble But Out

(72) Miami Hurricanes 14-9 (3-6)

Could Miami really make one last push? They picked up hard fought two point wins over Georgia Tech and Virginia. It seems the close games are finally turning in their favor. If the Canes have one more 2-0 week, they would really give themselves a shot at the NCAAs.

Next Games: 2/9 @ Wake Forest, 2/13 Duke

Good Wins: (68) Mississippi, (13) West Virginia, (41) Boston College

Bad Losses: None

(76) Maryland Terrapins 15-8 (5-4)

Maryland had a great atmosphere for their home game with Duke. Unfortunately, they didn't play great and lost 80-62. Saturday they beat Wake Forest 91-70. The Terps are running out of time; they need some high RPI wins.

Next Games: 2/9 Longwood, 2/12 @ Boston College

Good Wins: (85) Charleston, (46) Penn St., (79) Clemson

Bad Losses: None

(79) Clemson Tigers 16-7 (5-4)

The Tigers are staying alive barely. An ugly 49-47 loss at Virginia was followed by a solid 65-56 win at Georgia Tech. This is the week the Tigers have to make a move with two home games upcoming.

Next Games: 2/8 Boston College, 2/12 North Carolina

Good Wins: (90) Seton Hall, (85) Charleston, (72) Miami, (55) Florida State

Bad Losses: (139) Virginia

Better Win the ACC Tournament

(105) North Carolina State Wolfpack 12-11 (2-7)

Since blowing a 19 point lead at Clemson a couple of weeks ago, it looks like the Pack have basically quit. They lost to Virginia Tech at home 77-69, then lost by 24 at Duke. It could have been 44 if the Blue Devils hadn't lost interest.

Next Games: 2/13 @ Wake Forest,

Good Wins: (29) George Mason, (72) Miami

Bad Losses: None

(139) Virginia Cavaliers 12-11 (3-6)

I like how the Cavs compete even if they are a little short on overall talent. There was a 49-47 win over Clemson, but Virginia then blew a five point lead with 38 seconds in left against Miami. They ended up losing 70-68 in OT.

Next Games: 2/12 @ Florida St

Good Wins: (25) Minnesota, (60) Virginia Tech, (79) Clemson

Bad Losses: (142) Stanford, (296) Seattle, (138) Iowa St, (245) Wake Forest

(160) Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 10-12 (3-6)

Let the Paul Hewitt watch begin. The Jackets lost 59-57 at Miami then came home and, in a listless performance, got beat by Clemson 65-56. When you’re the “bad loss” for NCAA hopeful teams, you know the season has gone south.

Next Games: 2/10 Florida St. 2/13 Virginia Tech

Good Wins: (67) UTEP, (70) Richmond, (14) North Carolina, (60) Virginia Tech

Bad Losses: (325) Kennesaw St, (183) Siena, (173) Charlotte

(245) Wake Forest Demon Deacons 8-15 (1-7)

The Deas are just playing out the string. This week there were two 20+ point losses, one to Florida St and one to Maryland.

Next Games: 2/9 Miami, 2/13 NC State

Good Wins: None

Bad Losses: (295) Stetson, (206) Winthrop, (177) NC Wilmington, (187) Presbyterian, (160) Georgia Tech

Joanne Montanez Michelle Obama Kerry Suseck FSU Cowgirls Abbie Cornish
