Browns cornerback received death threats from Browns fans

You might have noticed that the Cleveland Browns had a few lapses in the secondary last year. You also might have noticed that cornerback Eric Wright was involved in a few of them.

And if you're a Browns fan and you noticed these things, you might have threatened to murder Eric Wright.

From Mary Kay Cabot at the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

"I went from people expecting me to be a top cornerback in the league to receiving death threats," Wright said. "It was a lot to deal with."

[...]

Wright never reported the death threats to the Browns or police, attributing them to the extreme passion of Browns fans.

"I wasn't fearing for my life," he said. "As serious as a death threat may be, I wasn't going to let a few bad apples ruin the whole tree."

Weird. It's almost like the people of Cleveland are bitter and frustrated with their local sports teams. Hm.

Give Wright credit, though. He says he still wants to be in Cleveland, and after having a productive sit-down with team president Mike Holmgren, is determined to make himself a better player in 2011.

I'm not sure it's the right attitude to just ignore a death threat -- you really can't be too careful with something like that -- but his attitude towards football is right where it should be. He's played some quality ball before. I'm sure he will again.
