Colts owner Irsay is perfectly content to keep Jim Caldwell

In the aftermath of a narrow home playoff loss to the Jets, Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Caldwell has been ripped like a pair of blue jeans in a Whitesnake video. He's never exactly been beloved, but now, he's a human piñata.

A human piñata with a job, though. No matter what everyone else thinks of Caldwell or the timeout that we'll call "unusual," Colts owner Jim Irsay told the Indy Star's Mike Chappell that he's happy with Caldwell as his head coach.

"Jim's done a really good job," Colts owner Jim Irsay said Tuesday. "(People) forget he was on the field less than a year ago while we were hoisting the AFC championship trophy in front of our fans."

[...]

"People express their opinion, which is great," he said. "But if you're not around this thing 24/7, if you're not involved in the deep, internal conversations, the perspective is hard to get.

"As the owner, I'm the one who has to decide who measured up under tough circumstances, who did their job. Our guys did."

If you say so, sir. As owner, you do actually get to decide who did a good enough job and who did not. If Irsay says Caldwell's good, then Caldwell's good.

And I'm not sure I agree with the people calling for Caldwell to be canned, either. Yes, the Colts lost in the first round to the Jets, but what exactly were we expecting? It's not like this was some legendary team that crashed and burned against some meatball of an opponent. The Jets are pretty good. And this Colts team was ravaged by injuries all year, struggled to get into the playoffs, and clearly did not have the personnel to stand up to the Jets' run blocking.

It feels to me like what happened to the Colts is exactly what should have happened to them.

If it's all about that one timeout, well, I can't defend the timeout. But do you really fire a guy over one timeout? Does one ill-advised timeout trump winning the last four games of the year to clinch a playoff spot?
