Puck Headlines: Drunk Russians defended; predicting 36 All-Stars

Here are your Puck Headlines: a glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• File this Al Iafrate in high-cut jorts photo under "what is seen that can not be unseen." From a 1993-94 Washington Capitals calendar unearthed by Truth About It. Check out the blog for more images, including Steve Konowalchuk in what would today be his eHarmony profile picture. Suggestive! [Truth About It]

• Nick Mendola says the sale of the Buffalo Sabres is "imminent." From Nick: "While the source could not name Terry Pegula as the buyer, they did inform me that some high-ranking members of Paychex, a company Tom Golisano owns, have received notice that their use of the owners box will cease by the next ‘home games' due to the impeding sale of the team." [Nick Mendola]

• Things have gotten ugly between Mike Commodore and coach Scott Arniel of the Columbus Blue Jackets after Commodore was placed on waivers (and cleared). Commodore told the Columbus Dispatch: "I've sat quiet and I've worked my (butt) off all year. I haven't said anything, while Arniel has gone to the media and said, basically, that I can't play. It gets to the point where I have to have some personal pride and I have to stand up for myself." [Dispatch]

• In praise of Dustin Byfuglien, with some startling comments from GM Rick Dudley of the Atlanta Thrashers: "You're talking 265 pounds and he can skate. I never thought I'd see a shot like Shea Weber has, but Dustin may have one, and he has the vision of Nik Lidstrom." [Toronto Star]

• Officials for the Russian world junior claim reports the team was intoxicated and tossed off a Delta flight were "false" and that "the guys were overwhelmed by emotion" and "therefore, gathering them took a little more time, and the team arrived at the airport with a delay." Uh ... sure. [Buffalo News]

• Line shifting for struggling Washington Capitals: Alex Ovechkin moves to the right side with Marcus Johansson in the middle and Brooks Laich on the left; Nicklas Backstrom is paired with Alexander Semin on the left and Mike Knuble on the right. [Dump ‘n Chase]

• We know the first six; now, who should be the next 36 NHL All-Stars for the 2011 Fantasy Draft? [The Hockey Writers]

• Catching up with Greg Walsh, the coach who was suspended (and then reinstated) for pulling his team off the ice after a racial slur. [Toronto Star]

Nathan Horton leaves Boston Bruins practice with a case of discomfort. [ESPN]

• Bold statement about the Chicago Blackhawks: "If the Blackhawks don't come away with 4 points this weekend then this team has even larger internal problems than anyone thought." [Between The Circles]

• The Vancouver Canucks are the best team in hockey and on a 16-1-2 run. But Kevin Bieksa thinks you can stuff your playoff talk in a sack, mister: "I can tell you there isn't one guy in this room who has even thought about the playoffs. I mean, have you looked at our schedule, we've got what, 14,15 games in January. We're just trying to get through the month, honestly we haven't even thought about a Cup in here. It's play, day off, practice, play. Man we're just trying to survive the month." [White Towel]

• The Canucks top the Aggregated NHL Power Rankings, leading the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers. [From The Rink]

• Tyler Dellow has a problem with conditional draft picks being traded between teams that face each other in the regular season; as in, would the New Jersey Devils have an interest in winning a game against the Dallas Stars if a loss would increase the likelihood of them making the playoffs and, in the process, bring the Devils closer to turning a third-rounder into a second-rounder. An interesting premise that would be better applied to in-conference trade than trades between teams that meet once a season. [MC79Hockey]

Jamie Langenbrunner talks about his return to the Dallas Stars. [Andrew's Stars Page]

• Maybe the flashy shootout stuff overshadowed it Thursday night. For whatever reason, this Tuukka Rask beauty didn't set the world on fire, but it's a hell of a stop from the Boston Bruins keeper.

• From the AHL: "The American Hockey League today announced that Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins right wing Jesse Boulerice has been suspended for ten (10) games as a result of his actions in a game at Charlotte on Jan. 5. Boulerice was suspended under the provisions of AHL Rule 28.1 (supplementary discipline) after review of an incident in the third period of Wednesday's game. Boulerice was determined to have deliberately applied physical force to an official without intent to injure, which carries a 10-game suspension under AHL Rule 40.3. Boulerice will begin serving his suspension tonight (Jan. 7) vs. Bridgeport. He will be eligible to return to the Penguins lineup on Jan. 28."

• Why David Backes is your first-half MVP for the St. Louis Blues. [Dispatch]

Josh Gorges on his season-ending surgery for the Montreal Canadiens: "Obviously, right now, it's tough to swallow and it sucks, but down the road I'll have a good knee that's 100 percent functional and working better than it has in seven years. I'll see the light at the end of the tunnel at some point and when that day comes, it will be good." [Habs]

• Tragic update on Mandi Schwartz: "Her most recent test shows there are 54% leukemia blasts in her bone marrow. The family has stopped the chemo now. Schwartz is at home in Saskatchewan. Scarcely four months after she underwent a stem-cell transplant at a Seattle hospital that seemed to promise fresh hope, Mandi Schwartz, who has had three relapses in less than a year, seems to be out of options, and almost out of time." [NYDN]

Ottawa Senators fans are getting wacky, naming an unofficial alcoholic beverage for the team. Punchy! [The 6th Sens, Malkin To The Kings]

• Finally, via TSN: Eh, Osgood ... Lidstrom ... old white dudes on the Detroit Red Wings. It happened. (Via Puck Buddy Liam O'Neil.)
