Puck Headlines: Glass-breaking hit; Patrick Sharp, All-Star snub?

Here are your Puck Headlines: a glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• With 25 goals, is there any way Patrick Sharp won't be an NHL All-Star when the rest of the fantasy pool is released on Tuesday? Tim Saasone believes he needs to be, but with Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith already in the game, he sees 15 players for 11 openings. "Ryan Kesler certainly has to make it with 23 goals and 40 points for a Canucks team on pace for 120 points. Then you have Danny Briere, Rick Nash, Alex Semin, Martin Havlat, Loui Eriksson, Matt Duchene, Pavel Datsyuk, Mike Richards, Paul Stastny, Claude Giroux, Dany Heatley and Logan Couture - and Sharp is having a better season than any of them." Here's the question: Would they take Marian Hossa or Patrick Kane ahead of Sharp given the nature of this new format? [Between The Circles]

Washington Capitals forward Mike Knuble on the handshake that wasn't after the Winter Classic with the Pittsburgh Penguins: "I don't know if it wasn't communicated or whatever, but it's no big deal. We don't shake hands in the regular season. That'll be more of a little 'pageantry' thing for the league and for the people on TV to see. The players don't really care." [Sports Radio Interviews]

• Is it time to gut the Columbus Blue Jackets? From Tom Reed: "Howson chose to give his core another year to prove last season was an aberration. That core has failed both Howson and the fans and it could cost the general manager his job. As he tries making moves to affect change, he'd better look for players that are all about winning." [Puck-Rakers]

• JJ From Kansas offers a Detroit Red Wings take on the Tom Kostopoulus suspension, contending it was a "lateral" hit and falls under Rule 48. [Winging It]

• Good rundown of what some current and former NHL players have said about concussion symptoms. From Jeff Beukeboom: "Waking up every day and hoping you would feel better and you didn't. Every day I woke up and my head felt like an over-inflated basketball. It was 2½ years of feeling like (garbage). I felt like (garbage) every day." [From The Rink]

• We're always happy to be on the same side of an issue with the great Tom Benjamin: "I can't help but think that Kostopoulos was suspended because Stuart was hurt and letting Tom off would make the league look bad like it looked bad when Cooke laid out Marc Savard. It would be fine by me if the league looked bad because that would force the league to - eventually - deal with the issue of head injury. Instead the NHL is pretending this hit was outside the rules and pretending they have dealt with the issue of head injury." [Canucks Corner]

• On Sunday evening, the Chicago Blackhawks announced that Hall of Fame legends Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull will also have bronze statues outside of United Center next season. Again, why pay for the bronze when there's a perfectly acceptable Stan Mikita statue last seen in Aurora, IL? [Blackhawks]

• From Daryl "Razor" Reaugh from the Dallas Stars: "Razor thinks...the rule governing the limit a player can curve his stick should be eliminated from the official NHL rulebook. Honestly, have you heard or seen an illegal stick call since they went to the bigger curve limit? Me neither. And while they're at it abolish that penalty for second player encroachment on a face-off, or have they already done that and just didn't tell anyone?" [Razor With An Edge]

• On Alex Frolov, the New York Rangers and long-term injured reserve. [Blueshirt Banter]

• The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled forward Dustin Jeffrey from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of American Hockey League, it was announced by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero. [Penguins]

Vancouver Canucks left wing Daniel Sedin, Anaheim Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller and Minnesota Wild goaltender Jose Theodore have been named the NHL ‘Three Stars' for the period ending Jan. 9. Sedin led all players in goals (five) and points (seven) last week, helping the Canucks post a 3-0-1 record and claim first place in the NHL overall standings. [NHL]

• With regard to the 2010-11 Nashville Predators: Has Barry Trotz ever done more with less? [The Tennessean]

• With the release of the Minnesota Wild's NHL Guardian super hero, Hockey Wilderness is done with this campaign: "The execution here has been absolutely terrible. The marketing campaign was well executed, but they were given nothing to work with. The daily reveal was a great idea in theory, but with the end result, is turning out to just be a cruel torturous ordeal that fans and PR team alike have to suffer through until this project can finally be allowed to die the merciful death it needs."
