For many, ringing in the new year presents the opportunity to embrace a clean slate. Whatever went wrong over the past 365 days fades away as a new year and new opportunities come into focus.For professional soccer players, it's a metaphorical sentiment that can become quite literal.
On Jan. 1, the international player market opened for business in many countries, including England, Spain, Italy and Germany. The January window gives players the chance to evaluate their situations and potentially pursue transfers or loans to greener pastures.
Some need to escape their respective benches (or doghouses) and start anew. Others may be looking to tackle steeper challenges. From the perspective of U.S. internationals, many of whom are on the fringes of the world's top leagues, it's a time when individual hope and ambition can take center stage.
Certain players' transfer fates have already been determined. World Cup hero Landon Donovan spurned interest from a bevy of teams reportedly hoping to secure his services on loan and decided to rest up until the Los Angeles Galaxy returns to MLS action in March.
