You wouldn't necessarily expect the Detroit Lions to go 91 yards for a touchdown in just two plays against a Chicago Bears defense that has been playing at a lights-out level most of the season and third-string quarterback Drew Stanton under center. But that's just what happened with less than a minute left in the first half of the Bears' eventual 24-20 win over the Lions
The Lions started at their own 9-yard line with 53 seconds left, and started off with rookie stud running back Jahvid Best trucking for a 45-yard gain off right tackle to the Chicago 46. Then, Stanton hit Calvin Johnson for yet another long play in which Megatron stiff-armed Bears defender D.J. Moore into oblivion on a post from the left slot.
"We did a tremendous job," Best said of Detroit's rushing attack after the game. "We had everybody on point. We made sure everybody knew what they were doing and we were out there making plays."
The Lions aren't there just yet - they're not disciplined enough to beat elite teams, but on plays like this, and when their front four gets rolling, they're very impressive in fits and starts. It's clear that head coach Jim Schwartz and general manager Martin Mayhew are on to something, but you can't erase years of Matt Millen overnight.
Johnson may have summed it up best for a team that is trying to battle back from the only 0-16 regular season in NFL history just three seasons ago. "Today we came in with a message that we wanted to finish the season 7-9. Okay, we can't do that, so we want to finish this thing 6-10."
