Puck Previews: 'The Dreidel' vs. Oilers' power outage; Caps/Flyers

Here are your Puck Previews: Spotlighting the key games in NHL action, news and views as well as general frivolity. Make sure to stop back here for the nightly Three Stars when the games are finished.

• Today's Great Moment in Awkward Timing: Scott Nichol gets suspended for 4 games for an elbow to the head of Phoenix Coyotes defenseman David Schlemko on the same day the Sharks release "Scott Nichol is a lousy dentist" ad. [Sharks]

Preview: Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins, 7 p.m. More joyous injury news for the Wings here: Rookie goaltender Thomas McCollum, who was recalled to back up Joey MacDonald, broke his finger in the morning skate. Which means Jimmy Howard, bum knee and all, is the backup.

Preview: Washington Capitals at Philadelphia Flyers, 7 p.m. Stunning stat from Japers' Rink on Alex Ovechkin: "The Caps have gone 124 power-plays (and fired 222 shots with the extra man) without an Ovechkin power-play goal. That simply will not do."

Preview: Vancouver Canucks at Colorado Avalanche, 9 p.m. The start was what can be called a crucial 5-game homestand for the Avs. The White Towel focuses on the plummeting fortunes of Mason Raymond, who is now centering the fourth line.

Preview: Minnesota Wild at Edmonton Oilers, 9:30 p.m. Michael Russo calls the Wild's goalie Anton "The Dreidel" Khudobin due to his unorthodox style, which is awesome. He gets the start here with Niklas Backstrom nearly back. Meanwhile, the Oilers will try to snap a franchise record of 11 straight games without a power-play goal. The Ryan Whitney for the season obviously plays a role. The Oilers power play is Shannon Tweed movie bad. That's bad. Watch the Game Live Via Hockey Night on Y!
