Saturday's Three Stars: Stafford's trick; Colton Orr antics for Leafs

No. 1 Star: Drew Stafford, Buffalo Sabres

The Boston Bruins took a 4-2 lead in the first period ... and Drew Stafford cut it to 4-3 with 41 seconds left in the frame. He then tied the game in the second period. After Boston took a 6-5 lead in the third period, Stafford sent the game into overtime with a goal at 19:32 to complete the hat trick. He scored in the shootout as well, and the Sabres won a wild game over the Bruins, 7-6. Jason Pominville had a 4-point night.

No. 2 Antti Niemi, San Jose Sharks

Niemi didn't have the most challenging night, but his 29 saves back-stopped the Sharks to a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Kings. Said Kings coach Terry Murray: "Niemi saw a lot of pucks that were coming from up top. He's a good goaltender, and he's going to be a better goaltender if you don't create a lot of havoc and get in his face on a consistent basis." The Sharks avenged a 4-0 Jonathan Quick shutout from Monday, as Devin Setoguchi had the lone goal.

No. 3 Star: Eric Fehr, Washington Capitals

In front of 68,111 rain-soaked fans at the Winter Classic in Heinz Field, Fehr converted a Marc-Andre Fleury blunder into the tie-breaking goal and then beat Fleury on a breakaway to give the Capitals the 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Check out Leahy's take here.

Honorable mention: Tyler Bozak scored two of the Toronto Maple Leafs' five consecutive goals in a 5-1 win over the Ottawa Senators, giving goalie James Reimer the win in his first NHL start. ... Nate Thompson scored 19 seconds into overtime to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a 2-1 win against the New York Rangers, who earned a point when Marian Gaborik scored with 46 seconds left in regulation. ... Tuomo Ruutu had a 4-point night (1 goal, 3 assists) as the Carolina Hurricanes chased Martin Brodeur (7 shots, 4 saves) and buried the New Jersey Devils, 6-3. Sergei Samsonov and Jeff Skinner both scored two goals. Zac Dalpe scored his first NHL goal for Carolina. ... Finally, Mark Giordano's second period goal stood up as the Calgary Flames won another round in the Battle of Alberta, 2-1.

Did you know? The Tampa Bay Lightning acquired 41-year-old goalie Dwayne Roloson from the New York Islanders for minor league defenseman Ty Wishart.

Dishonorable mention: Tuukka Rask was pulled by the Bruins after giving up three goals on 16 shots. ... Brodeur didn't talk to the media after getting pulled after eight minutes vs. Carolina. ... The Jerome Bettis/Franco Harris puck shooting competition between periods on NBC was just a bad, bad idea. ... Jordan Eberle was injured for the Oilers. ... Finally, it was a Colton Orr kind of game between Toronto and Ottawa. Orr fought Matt Carkner in the first period and Chris Neil in the third, the latter being a terrific bout. He also earned a cross-checking penalty and a misconduct in that scrum, giving him 24 penalty minutes for the game.
