Video: Do Briere, Hartnell deserve punishment for bench blows?

UPDATE: Briere gets a $1,000 fine and Hartnell gets nada.

Near the end of the Philadelphia Flyers' 3-2 win at the New York Rangers on Sunday night, forward Brandon Prust laid out Kimmo Timonen with a hit along the boards after the Flyers D-man cleared the puck.

This drew the ire of captain Mike Richards, who skated with Prust and then did something that's a staple for any six-man tag-team match in professional wrestling: Forcing him over to Richards' Flyers teammates for some illegal man physicality, as both Danny Briere and Scott Hartnell landed blows from the bench.

Here's the clip:

Larry Brooks of the NY Post believes this incident "provides grounds for supplementary discipline," and it's not as if the Rangers don't know from precedent here.

Brandon Dubinsky was fined $1,000 (according to Brooks) for grabbing and popping Colin Fraser during a memorable melee in Madison Square Garden back in November. (Video of the Dubinsky affair is here.)

So expect the league to hand out something similar to Briere and/or Hartnell, unless Colin Campbell wants to take Briere's previous suspension this season, and subsequent whining about how it factored into his All-Star game snub, into account.

But honestly: Isn't this just Television Justice? Wonder how many fines and suspensions would have been handed out during the Bullies days if there were more cameras in the arenas to catch these little anarchistic moments?

Not saying this isn't a violation of rules, because it is; but let's hope the NHL keeps this thing at a financial hit and nothing more.

Stick-tap Kuklas for the clip.
